Tanzanite – December Birthstone

Although not as valuable as some other stones, such as diamond or ruby, tanzanite is one of the rarest gemstones in the world. It can only be found in a small mining area of Tanzania, and it’s name was first used by Tiffany and Co. as they believed it would be a more appealing name to consumers than ‘blue zoisite’.

Unlike many gemstones, Tanzanite does not have a vast ancient history, as it was not discovered in commercial quantities until the 1960s. It was quickly discovered that heat treating the blue zoisite would bring out it’s natural blues much stronger, as well as changing some brown or green zoisites to a similar beautiful colour.
